Kickboxing for Beginners: What to Expect in Your First Month
Kickboxing for beginners made simple: what your first month feels like, how often to train, and how new students start at AK-49 Martial Arts in Soldotna.

Yes, kickboxing is good for beginners. Kickboxing for beginners starts with the basics: how to stand, how to throw a clean punch, and how to kick without losing your balance. Your first month is about learning those pieces, getting used to the work, and finding out you can do more than you thought.
Below are honest answers to the questions people ask before their first class.
Is Kickboxing Good for Beginners
It is, as long as the class is run with beginners in mind. You don't need to know anything on day one. A good coach starts you with your stance and your guard, then builds from there.
Kickboxing is also a friendly way into martial arts. You're mostly working with punches and kicks, so there's less to think about than in styles that add elbows, knees and the clinch. If you're curious how the two compare, read Kickboxing vs Muay Thai.
Nobody expects you to look smooth. Everyone in the room was new once, and most of them remember how awkward it felt.
Is Kickboxing a Martial Art
Yes. Kickboxing is a striking martial art. You learn to fight standing up, using punches and kicks, and you learn real technique, not just moves to a beat.
That's the difference between a kickboxing class at a martial arts gym and a cardio class. You still get a hard workout, but you also learn how to stand, how to protect yourself, and how to hit with good form.
It also means there's always more to learn. The basics come fast, and getting really sharp takes years. That's a big part of why people keep coming back.
Is Kickboxing Hard for Beginners
Some parts are hard, and that's okay. Your first few classes ask your body to move in ways it isn't used to. Your feet get crossed up, your kicks feel off, and your arms get heavy from holding your hands up.
The good news is you don't have to be in shape to start. That's the part people get backwards. A few weeks of training is what gets you in better shape, not the other way around.
Go at your own pace. Take a break when you need one, grab some water, and jump back in. Nobody is keeping score on your first day.
What to Expect at Your First Kickboxing Class
Most beginner classes follow a simple flow. You warm up, work on your stance and footwork, then learn a short combination, like a jab, a cross and a kick.
Then you practice it. With us, that means hitting pads with a partner, drilling combinations and working the heavy bag. Your partner holds the pads for you, then you switch and hold for them.
Holding pads teaches you more than you'd think. Watching each punch come at the pad helps you see what clean technique looks like.
Expect to feel a little lost and a lot tired. Both are normal. By the end of the hour, you'll know a few things you didn't know when you walked in.
Is Kickboxing a Good Workout
Yes. Kickboxing is a hard, full body workout. Your legs drive every kick, your core turns every punch, and your shoulders work the whole time you keep your hands up.
It works your lungs too. You push through a round on the pads or the bag, catch your breath, and go again.
The best part is that it rarely feels like exercise. You're busy learning a skill, so the hour goes by a lot faster than it does on a treadmill.
Is Kickboxing Good for Weight Loss
Kickboxing can help, because it's a hard workout that uses your whole body. A lot of people come in for the fitness and stay because they like learning something real.
But no class does the job on its own. What you eat matters. Showing up week after week matters. Kickboxing gives you a reason to keep coming back, and that steady habit is where the real change comes from.
We won't promise you a number on a scale. What we can promise is honest work, coaches who pay attention, and a room full of people who want you to get better.
How Many Times a Week Should I Do Kickboxing
Two or three classes a week is a good place for most beginners to start. That's often enough to remember what you learned last time, with a day or two in between for your body to recover.
Once a week still helps. You'll improve, just more slowly. If once a week is what your life allows right now, start there and add a class when you're ready.
Going every day sounds exciting, but most new people get sore and burned out fast. Build the habit first. Look at the class schedule and pick the classes you can keep week after week.
